John Lampman of Ashford, Cattaraugus Co., NY

Mr. John Lampman was born in Pittston, NY., October 20, 1790. The family consisted of eleven children, all but him long since dead. When a young man he worked all through the central part of New York; learned the coopers trade and also the trade of shoemaker. On October 18, 1818 he married Miss Mary Hufstader at Frankfort, NY; moved to Ashford, Cattaraugus County, the town then being called Ischua, where he has ever since resided. Six children were born to Mr. Lampman and wife. Mr. Lampmn, in his many stories of the old war times, and of when he first came to Buffalo, says there was but one house to be seen here, and that only the burned remnant of one, and near it an old well-sweep, shot in two by a ball from a ship on the lake, and what little remained of the cabin was riddled with shot, so that the wind had free passage through the deserted and silent ruins; the grass filling the untrodden paths, and the moon shining throught the rifts into the bark covered roof. In September, 1862, his wife died, since which time his home has been with some of his children, or children's children. He now lives with his granddaughter, Mrs. H. M. Reed. He is a Free-will Baptist; has been a life-long Democrat; has chewed tobacco for 90 Years “ began its use when it grew in the fields, and was gathered and cured just as catnip and mother-wort were.”
Mr. Lampman was a young man of great courage and strength, and was an expert hunter. He has killed hundreds of deer, bears, wolves, and wild-cats, and can interest his listeners all day with hunting stories. He took an active part as a soldier in the War of 1812, and was a witness of the battle of Lake Champlain. Mr. Lampman was in good health at last accounts; retains all of his faculties in a remarkable degree, with the exception of his eye sight, which is failing.
