"Imprints On the Sands of Time" Pages 6 - 16 The Lampman Story

The ancestor of most of the Lampmans in America was a Palatine.

Quoting from Robinson's " History of Western Europe " - The accounts of the misery and depopulation of Germany caused by the Thirty Years' War are well nigh incredible. Thousands of villages were wiped out altogether; in some regions the population was reduced by half, in others to a third or even less, of what it had been at the opening of the conflict. The flourishing city of Augsburg was left with but sixteen thousand souls instead of eighty thousand. The people were fearfully barbarized by privation and suffering and by the atrocities of the soldiers of all the various nations". The war ended in 1648 and was the last great conflict caused by the differences between Catholics and Protestants. The Palatinate was ruled in 1618 by the Calvinist Frederick the Elector. The Elector of Saxony, was Lutheran.

The Palatines who fled from the terrors to the Holland and Flemish coast and to England were inspired to do so because England under the Protestant James I, father-in-law of Frederick the Palatine Elector, was a safe refuge. The English, although absorbing some, sent several thousand to New York, planning to encourage the production of naval stores and tar along the upper Hudson River.

W. A. Knittles' book " The Early 18th Century Palatine Emigration " and a book by Cobb - " The Story of the Palatines " detail information concerning them in Europe and here. The original immigrants arriving in America quickly spread from the upper Hudson area to Schoharie, the Mohawk Valley frontier and some, by the overland route, to Pennsylvania. Later most of the thousands went to Pennsylvania direct through Philadelphia.

The first group were pitifully poor and the British Governor Hunter of New York had to feed them (out of his own pocket, incidentally) which led to the recording of a New York Subsistence List 1710-1712. Herein is the name of Peter Lampman (1010) 3-2, 3-1.
First Generation

These figures mean 3 adults and 2 children (10 years or under) in 1710, three adults and one child in 1712. A man named Simmendinger, also an immigrant, returned to Germany in 1717, and published a list of Palatines in New York. His records, now translated for a good many years, have been very helpful to genealogists. On his list is also Peter Lampman (1010), wife Catherine (1014) and two children, living at East Camp. An early entry in the Pastor Kocherthal records lists Peter Landmann (1010) as being present at the communion service at Queensberg 3-23-1712 and also the marriage of this Peter's immigrant son, John Peter (1011) as follows -"February 24, 1719 Peter Landmann, son of Peter Landman of Stockheim, commune Litting-Isenburg and Johann, married Elizabetha Planck (1012), daughter of Johann Planck (1013), formerly a citizen of Dansenau, commune of Nassau." This Stockheim is in Hessen. Kocherthal was the early Lutheran pastor who kept the records and performed the religious ceremonies for these early German pioneers. On January 17, 1715/16 Peter Lantman (1010) took the Naturalization Oath at Albany, New York. The identity of the one remaining child of Peter (1010) in 1712 was not clear from the Zion church records of John Caspar (1128). Zion church of Athens was the mother church of the Palatines on the Hudson. It was formed in 1704 . Here are the earliest records, with the ministers covering several small churches on both sides of the river. The birth record in the Germantown Reformed Church of the Camp of Caspar's (1128) daughter Elizabeth in 1732 makes it certain that John Caspar (1128) wife Elizabeth Row (1129) was the child. Dom Falckner, the minister of the New York City German Protestant Church has an entry 1722 in his handbook thus - Caspar Lampman (1128) for membership. Looks like a confirmation ceremony but proves the second child relationship. The biographical sketch in Hughes' "American Ancestry 1887" of Peter Lampman (1375) of Craryville stated - "the ancestor of Peter of Craryville came from Holland and settled Copake, Columbia Co. N. Y." What happened to Peter (1010) and wife Catherine is unknown. They are not listed as having returned to England or Holland. Perhaps the story of an Indian massacre at Kiskatome may be the answer, or more probable they succumbed to disease during the hard times. Careful search of all records show no other early Lampman immigrants other than this one family although there are at least 5 other Lampman name variants who were immigrants.

1. Hottens " List of Emigrants to America " shows in 1623 one John Landman (7121) at Flourdein Hundred, Va. who may be related to the George Landman (7120) of Queen Ann Co. Maryland who per will of John Andrew of Salem, N. J. 5-1-1759 received part of an estate.

2. Rev. Falckner lists 1719 that Pieter Kastner and wife Margaretha Langmannin were wit nesses at baptism at Raritans, New Jersey.

3. Andreas Lantsman married Anna Mits bp. 2-6-162-, daughter of Daniel Mits and Maria de Marees ( N.Y.G. & B. Vol. 63, p. 309)

The book " 30,000 names of German, Swiss to America, Pennsylvania - 1727-1776 " lists on ship " Daniel " 9-26-1749 Johannes Landmann and Conrad Wagner.

5. The following (AQ) church records of Arent Lansman -

1660 Eodam Jan Van der Linden, and Jannetje Barents bp. Johannes wit. Arent Jeuriaen- Landsman, Cathlyntie Barents.

1661 den 30d Arent Jeuriaenszen Lantsman and Belitie Lodowyck bp. Jannetje.

1666 Eodem Arent Jeuriaenszen Lansman and Maria Belitie Lodovyck bp. Maria

1669 den 8 dict. Arent Lansman and Belitie Lodoyck pb. Jeuyraen, wit. Tryntie Roelofs

1669 or later den 4 Sept. Adrian Bogaerdt, wedr van Susanna Hamilton, married Belitje Post, wede van Arie Jeuriaensz Lansman, both residing here.

The five above are listed, not because of any known connection but because there have been recorded so many variants of the LAMPMAN spelling. The above variants are excluded from our consideration only because no further traces have been found.

It does happen to be true that some Lampman's came to America over 150 years after Peter (1010) and family. The 1880 census Philadelphia shows a Louis Lampman (5243) b. 1856, wife Elizabeth b. 1857 both born Germany and the same census Oil City, Venango Co. Pa. shows a real oddity, a Henry Lampman (5238) b. 1841, wife Mary b. 1841, both born Ireland. Louis (5243) had Amelia (5244) b. 1877 Pa. and Louis (5245) b. 1880 while Henry (5238) had daughter Mary (5239) b. 1865 Ireland and Florence (5240) b. 1871, Hary (5241) b. 1875 and Alice (5242) b. 1879, all born Pa. Other 1880 census records. Wheatland Twp. Carroll Co. Iowa has a William Lampman (5835), age 40 born Prussia, wife Theresia, age 37 born Iowa children - Anna (5836) age 11, John (5837) age 9, Theresia (5838) age 7, Mary (5839) age 5, Josephina (5840) age 3, all born Iowa. Also in Arcadia Twp. Carroll Co. Iowa a Henry Lampman (5841) b. Berlin, wife Wilhelmena, age 36 born Berlin, children - Frank (5842) age 10, son Elmenens (5843) age 8, Josepena (5844) age 2 all born Iowa.

The Lampman line was prolific with sons. The following descending tabulation, represents data from churches and many sources, which follow the code on page ahead for space saving purposes.

There has been some speculation that Peter Lampman (1010) and John Peter (1011) were one and the same person, with first wife Catherine (1014) and second wife Elizabeth Planck (1012). This while contrary to tradition in the writers branch of the family(as well as other branches) can also be refuted by the following points

1. If Peter (1011) were a widower, it would be stated so clearly in the Kocherthal marriage record, for such was this pastor's practise in the case of other widowers.

2. If Peter (1011) were a full grown of-age man at time of emigration, the Kocherthal wording would have been different thus " Peter Lampman (formerly of Stockheim), son of Peter Lampman (also formerly of Stockheim) etc ." In other words the criteria of previous citizenship applies only to an of-age man.

3. The Simmindinger record of Peter (1010) wife Catherine 2 children in 1717 does not conflict with the Governor Hunter ration lists of 1710-1712.The Governor Hunter list distinguish adults as above 10 years old, while Simmindinger merely lists as a child any unmarried person. Since the ration lists for 1710-1712 both list 3 adults, John Peter (1011) must have been at least eleven years old in 1710. Thus in 1717 he would be 18 and in 1719 when he married, 20 or even a few years more, all of which is reasonable and likely, especially since Elizabeth Plank was 23 when married.

7

4. The Lampman papers in the New York State genealogy library agree with the ones in our branch of the family showing that Rev. Lewis Lampman (638), a genealogist, in 1885 was inquiring in Germany and among older Lampmans here for a - missing Peter. This can only be the Peter (1010) since at the Reverend's time, his ancestry was clear back to and including John Peter (1011).

5. Catherine (1014), if she died between 1717 and 1719, would surely have been listed in Rev. Kocherthals record of deaths, but there is so nuch listing.

Finally success. The records of Peter Lampman 1010) were located in Hessen Germany, in 1974 by Herr Wittman see page 87). Also in 1974, David Lampman (5226) went to Germany and in company with Herr Wittman and others searched many church records in Hessen and found many Lampmans recorded. The story and data follows.

The Dekanat of Budingen informed that the parochial records of Stockheim (remember the Pastor Kocherthal record) were stored in Rohrbach. The pastor there wrote that a Peter Lampman (1011) was b. 4-5 1700, his parents being Peter Lampman (1010) and Catherina. Later data from another source, looking at the same record, states it was son Johann Peter (1011) bp. 6-41701. The letter from the pastor, R. Fehling, gives the following data:

Excerpt from the record community Stockheim, which is found in the oldest Church Register of the Church in Rohrbach. It includes the years 1699-1732.

Page Year

65 1700 On April 5 a young son was born to Peter Lampman and his wife Catharina who was brought for baptism by Michael Dinges son Peter, and was named Peter. (1011).

67 1703 Aug- 5, the daughter of Peter Lambmans was born and baptized on Aug, 8. Witness was Anna Elisabeth, Class Windecker's daughter. She was named Anna Elisabeth (9213).

218 1704 On May 29 the youngest daughter of Peter Lambmann d. and was buried on May 30 (the same month).
From the little record book of the pastor:

1705 Johann Caspar (1128) b. 10-21, bp. 10-22, son of Peter Lampmanns (1010) and Catharina. Godparents Johann Caspar Deckmann (8924) and Elizabeth, his wife.

In the records of Parish Dudelsheim is the marriage 7-20-1698 at Stockheim of Peter Landtmann (1010) from Gedern, son of the late Balthasar Landtmann 8925) to Catherina (1014), widow of the late Cunradt Frikk en) (8927). Also the marriage 11 11 1685 (page 181) of Conradt Frikk (8927) to Catharina Dekmann (1014), daughter of Conrad Deckmann (9010); also the death of Conradt Frikk (8927) 10-241692, age 37. Found in the Castle of Ortenberg in record book Akte X G 436, p. 9 was the permit dated 7-7 1698 "Peter Lambmann of Gedern has permission to go to Stockheim by paying 10 guldens, signed by the Fursten.

8

Two separate searches were made of the Gedern records. The second one included deaths, communicants, confirmands as well as births and marriages. There were many Lambmann, Landman, Landtman entries. The oldest, records show three persons, who may or may not be brothers: Balthazar Landmann (0974), Christian Landmann (8977) (the name of both in descent is sometimes spelled Landtman, and Peter Lambman (8988) (it should be pointed out here the name spelling LAMBMAN persists in the Gedern records). Thus, the second search turned up the clear clue which shows Balthasar Lambman (8925) was father of Peter (1010), the immigr ant. In addition to the name spelling is the statement in Peter's (1010) marriage record in 1698 that he was son of the late Balthasar Landtman (note this spelling was in a Dudelsheim record not Gedern), while the other possible Balthasar (8995), son of Christian (8977) death record is 1722. Peter's (1010) name was spelled Lambmann in the permit to go from Gedern to Stockheim, and also in the emigration request. We find that Peter Lanbman (1010) was listed as a communicant at Gedern in 1693. So the records of Lambmans is:

2-18-1685 d. Anna, widow of Peter Lambman (8988) 6-1648 Peter Lambman (8988) and Anna N.N. bp. The archivist of Furstlich Ysenburg and Budingische Rentkammer, Dr. D. Reimers states the only document they have concerning any Lampmans is an application for emigration of a group, including Peter Lambman (1010), addressed to their Soverign Count Carl August zu Ysenburg and Budingen. The Permit, dated 8-31-1709, was granted and it reads "Peter Lampman (1010) with wife and 4 children".

This new find and the record of Catherina Deckman's (1014) 1st marriage to Conradt Frikk (8927), which produced two children: Johann Curt (8924) b.1686 Stockheim and Jorg (9023) b. 1688 Stockheim, raises some questions the answers to which can only be guessed at. It is possible, but highly improbable, that one or two of the Frikk children were included in the 4 children (kindern) of peter (1010) as listed in the permit to emigrate. They would have been 21 and 23 years old in 1709 and not likely to be listed as kindern. By 1710, after a stopover in England, the Governor Hunter ration list shows Peter 3 adults, 2 children, thus one child must have died in between. That still leaves another child to account for, and this could easily be the Margaretha Langmannin (8654), wife of Pieter Kastner (8655) mentioned on page 47. If this is so, the 3 adults in 1710 would be Peter (1010) wife Catherine and Margaretha b. ca. 1698, the two

children John Peter (1011) and John Caspar (1128). By 1712 Margaretha has m. and John Peter becomes the third adult, John Caspar the one child. Suppose someone suggests substituting Frederick (1153) for Margaretha. This would change the present records of his age at time of emigration to Canada and also at death by a generation, most improbable. And if Frederick (1153) were the child that disappeared from 1709 to 1710, this would require that even more years be added to the already most improbable situation. Also should be remembered the Rohrbach Church record of death in 1704 of Peters (1010) youngest daughter, making it most likely the third adult in 1710 in New York was female.

The research in Germany uncovered this item: Hans Lampman (8900) was b. 6-25 1643 in Budingen, illegitimate son of a daughter of Bastian Lampman (8901) who lived in Altwiedermus, near Budingen. This Bastian is the earliest Lampman so far found in the Lampman area in Hessen.

The Documentary History of New York, Vol* 111, Pg. 724, shows Peter Lampman (1010) or (1011) on a list made by Jacob Sharp to Governor Burnett of all the heads of families that are willing to continue on that land (Livingston), being 63 in number. On 1-17171516 at a mayor's council held at ye city hall of Albany, Peter Lantman (1010) took an oath of allegiance.
