Second Generation, John Caspar line only .

John Caspar Lampman (1128) was born by or shortly before 1710. His wife was Elizabeth Row (1129) who he married in 1731 or shortly before. The home was in Copake, now Columbia County, N.Y. "American Ancestry" by Hughes states that Caspar (1128) came from Holland and settled in Copake and had a son Peter of Craryville (near Copake) who died 1798 and who married Margaret Cook. Proved children of John Caspar (1128) were –

Elizabeth (1374) bp. (E) 2-23-1732. No further record.

Mary Barbara (1378) b. 1735 tombstone, b. 6-13 bp. 6-16-1734 (A) (AF), married 10-19-1755 (E) Arent Williams (1379). The record reads – Arent William Junkmann married Mareitgen Lantman. The tombstone reads -- Mary Barbara, d. 3-18-1818 age 82.

Anna Margreta (2312) b. 2-23-1736 (AF) In (J) Pieter Lantman (1375) wife Margaretha were witnesses 9-22-1776 to bp. of Anna Margaretha (9699) to John Diedrick Schneider (9700) wife Anna who is probably (2312).

Martene (1130) b. 10-1741 (A) at T'bosch. (The Tar Camp) Very unexpectedly the writer found in the Ruyter Papers(Canadian Achieves - Ottawa) a reference that storekeeper Henry Ruyter had sold goods ca 1785 or earlier to aMartin Lampman. There is no other Martin than (1130) presently known. The Arthur Kelley translation of theZion (A) Church records states Casper Lampman (1128) and Elizabeth bp. 11-8-1741 Marlene instead of Marten(1130?).

John Caspar (1131) bp. 5-3-1744 (A) married Anna Mary Seeman (Simon) (7338).

Magdalena (1382) married David Williams (1383) 12-18-1759 (AM). The record reads: David Williams, born DuchessCounty married Magdalena Landtman of Livingston Manor.

Peter (1375) bp. 11-5-1749 (E), married Margaret Cook (1376). However the Tombstone:Niver Cemetery, Craryville, N.Y. states Peter (1375) wife Margaret d. 8-28-1838 age 87 years 6 mo. 23 days, i.e. born 1751. Hughes "American Ancestry" is noted for detail errors.

Anna (1377) bp. 5-31-1753 (E). The record states "parents-Caspar Lampman and Elizabeth Row". This is the onereference to her name Row. It is possible Anna Lampman (1377) is the Annatje Leeman who m. Jacobus Row (0890) 2-17-1785 in (K) where the record states both from Albany County. John Schmit (6822) and AnatjeLampman (1377) bp. (N) Gertruy (0232) b. 4-5-1797.

In addition from church and sponsorship records, especially since none would fit in the Peter Lampman (1011) descent, the following were their children -- Catherina (1380), who married Hendrik J. Witbeck (1381).

Hendrick (1384) b. 5-24-1746, who married Susanna Simon (1338) b. 1754 d. 8-11-1825 TS Niver.

Minutes of the Committee of Safety of the Manor of Livingston, Columbia County, N.Y. (N.Y.G. & B. Rec. Vol. 60 pp. 329, 331) states at meeting of Oct. 7, 1776 that "Hendk (1384) and Casper (1131) Lambman were among those said to have signed the 'King's Book'," and at meeting of Oct. 14, 1776 that" -------Lantman and Caspar Lantman were among those said to have 'hussad' for the King". But significant is all the baptisms from 1781 to 1794 and the 1790 census of Livingston Town, Columbia County, N.Y., Hendrick (1-2-7) and Caspirus, Jr. (1-3-5). Then too Hendrick Lantman and Casper Landsman were listed among the British prisoners of war (ibid. p. 240) Casparus Lantman, Jr. is listed as soldier in Col. P.R. Livingston's regiment 9-11-1778, and captured by the British (See Montgomery County archives). All the above indicates a clear switch of sides, even if preceded by some wavering.

(X70) Eagle, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, lists David Lampman (1350), age 75, farmer, b. N.Y., Elizabeth Lampman (?), age 65, b. Pennsylvania.

Casper Lampman (4586) returned to Eagle, Waukesha County, Wisconsin per (X70) age 44, b. N.Y., Charlotte S. (070), age 19, Foster (6794) age 14. This Charlotte is not identified. The family has no record of a second wife and it is not likely she is Elizabeth (6793) since the same census lists in the house hold of Adam Shultis an Elizabeth Lampman, age 16, exactly correct. There is a question as to whether the 1870 census contains the C. for Caroline. Three different persons have read the microfilm and two did not find a C.

The Caspar Lampman (4586) Bible has an entry "David Lampman d. 10-13-1869". This clearly makes David (1350) his father. The Bible also lists death of Jacob Lampman (7583) 12-15-1892; Casper (4586) had a sister Caroline (A396) b. 12-8-1822, d. 8-19-1899, who m. Norman Shultis (A397) b. 4-19- 1818, d. 8-20-1905.

The 1850b census Eagle, Waukesha County, Wisconsin lists Caspar Lampman (4586) wife C. (Caroline).

lists wife Sally (1371), son Theodore (1372), daughter Catherine (6730), grandson John F. (2315), son of Theodore (1372). The 1870 census Copake lists John (1367), age 58, wife Sarah, age 59, son Theodore (1372), age 32, his wife, Alice (1373), age 24. (X192) Columbia Co., N.Y., lists Mrs. Alice M. Lampman (1373) 72, John (2315) 43, his wife, May (5253), 39, Sarah (2316) 32.

The 1855 census Copake, Columbia, Co., N.Y., lists John L. (1344), age 66, wife Catherine (3242), age 62, son George (6736), age 28, Elizabeth (6782), daughter-in-law, age 18.

The 1870 census Hollowville, Columbia Co., N.Y. lists John Holsapple (6835), age 38; wife Elizabeth A. (6782) age 34; Sarah Lampman (7402) age 11. In same household the older John Lampman (1344), age 81, wife Catherine (3242), age 78. Nearby is listed Jacob Lampman (5255), age 24; wife Henrietta (5256), age 22. The 1855 Census, Town of Austerlitz, Columbia Co., N.Y. lists Caspar Lampman (2282), age 46; wife Lydia, age 44; children Adam (2278), age 22; John F. Elizabeth (Williams) Lampman (6782), age 24, per 1860 census Gallatin Mills P.O., Columbia Co., N.Y. living with her father Jeremiah Williams (7400) with her daughters Mary Lampman (7401) age 4, b. 1856; Sarah Lampman (7402) age 1, b. 1859. This data practically eliminates Jacob W. Lampman (5255) as being a probable son of William (3248). In fact, without proof, it seems highly possible Jacob W. (5255) is the same as (5946), having married twice.

The (N) record of marriage 1-6-1853 of George Lampman (6736) to Elizabeth Ann Williams (6736) and the 1855 census of John Lampman (1344) which lists son George (6736), age 28, and daughterin-law Elizabeth (6782), age 18, clearly make William Lampman (3248) and George (6736) the same person. It also strengthens the possibility listed that George (6736) is father of George W. (6524)

In this article is a reference to Peter Lampman (1375) saying his father was Rev. Cornelis Lampman, a native of Holland. This continues the tradition in the Caspar family but in addition to an improbable assumption compound the error by referring to Peter (1375) instead of Peter (1010). It is true that there are some interesting old world references to a Revend Peter Lantman of Holland in the "Ecclesiastical Records State of New York, Vol. I, p. 114, 116, 126, 582". These records contain

32

much correspondence between the Dutch Reformed church people in Holland and in New Amsterdam. The p. 126 reference 1639 says "that three ministers (including Rev. Lantman) were sent to the West Indies". Even if he had been selected .to go to New Amsterdam also, he seems to have managed to stay in Holland. There may be some connection with our Lampman's but no proof is presently available.

John Peter Lampman (1011) line only

Second Generation

John Peter Lampman (1011) was a resident of Hosck in 1745. He was witness to a baptism at Center Brunswick in 1745. He was born approximately 1699. In 1724 he was listed on Aug. 26 as Head of a Family, willing to remain in Germantown (p. 265 Columbia Co. History). His wife Johanna Elizabeth Planck (1012) was born 1696 from the record in the 1710 Colonial census of Palatines remaining in N. Y. which lists - "Planck, Johannes, 43; Maria Margt., 32; Johanna Eliz., 14; Ludwid Henrich, 6." Rev. Kocherthal lists "Johanna Elizabetha Planck" as attending communion service at New York City, Sept. 26, 1710. The records of 6 of John Peter's (1011) children are in Zion church (A) and 4 are in Albany Reformed Dutch church (D). In Gilead Lutheran (0), Center Brunswick, N. Y. on 3-21-1745 Peter Lampman Senior (1011) and wife Johanna Ellis (1012) were witnesses to a Frolich baptism. Johanna Ellis has confused some researchers thinking it was a second wife but the Ellis is merely a pastor's scrawl for Johanna Elizabeth Planck. This is clear from a bp. (A) 1744 where Peter Lampman, Sr. (1011) and Johana Elis (1012) h.h.v. and Peter Lampman, Jr. (1132) and Lisabet (1133) h.h.v. were joint witnesses.

To explain census records and other information such as church records for Lampman locations a brief story of Rensselaer Co. N. Y. as given in the "Landmarks of Rensselaer Co." by George B. Anderson pub. 1897 will help.Prior to 1683 the area was the East District of Patroon Van Rensselaer's Manor. Albany County was set up 1683. Then 1791 Rensselaer Co. was set off from Albany Co. A map of the Manor of Renselaerwick was made in 1767 by a John R. Bleeker and on it farm No. 121 was that of Hans Lantman (1210). No. 120 was Henry Letcher, No. 119 was John Ruiter. Hans (1210) father John Peter (1011) was a resident of Hoosic in 1745. John Michael (1202) although 38 at the time does not appear on the map since he lived just a little further North in Hoosic. There were a lot of Town line changes within Rensselaer Co. some occuring while it was still Albany Co. One important to us was the Town of Stephentown in 1784 being formed from Rensselaerwick, although until 1791 the official division of Rensselaer Co. was into four districts Rensselaerwick, Hoosick, Pittstown, and Schaghticoke. Pit Hogle was a settler Hoosic ca 1755 but no Lampman (1202) settler there is mentioned in the Landmark book. In 1791 the Town of Petersburgh (the north part) was taken off of Stephentown. So Hans (1210) farm was in Stephentown in 1790 census, in Petersburgh in 1800 and so close to the Hoosic line it was labeled Hoosic. On page 503 of the Landmark book is stated under Town of Petersburgh, earliest settlement was in the North near-junction of the Little Hoosick and Hoosick rivers, known as Hoosick or Hoosac. Hans Lantman was there in 1767. A Jonas Odell kept a store there ca 1780. So the location of John (1210) and John Michael (1202) and some first descent are really very close together. Hans wife Susannah (1211) in 1781 is listed from Hoosick. Jacob (1427) and Michael (5498) also are listed from Hoosic.

Peter (sometimes listed as Jr.) (1132 ) is recorded in an old Lampman German bible of 1730 (Coded Bi hereafter) and recopied in D.A.R. Bible Records, Vol. 69, pp. 44-45, as born July 1721. He married (A) (Bi) 4-211745 at Kiskatom. Elizabeth Schmidt (1133) born (Bi) March 26, 1727, child of Nicolaus S chmidt, This Peter took his family to the Mohawk Valley frontier and acquired land near St. Johnsville, N. Y. He and his wife and son Peter Jr. (1138) and his wife, are listed in 1770 and 1778 as members of the Stone Arabia Lutheran church (G). His son Henrich (1134) was killed and son Corporal Peter (1138) was wounded at the famous turning point battle of Oriskany. Private Peter (1132) and his sons were in Col. Jacob Klock's 2nd regiment Tryon Co. militia. In Sims "Frontiersmen of N. Y. 11 519)" is an account of a small skirmish called "Lampman's battle". Issue - Henrich(1134), Annatje (1136), Annatje (1137), Petrus Jr. (1138), Mareitje (1144), Elizabeth (1145).

C. M. Young's "Young Families" states the family lived in vicinity of Hoosick. This family was closely associated with that of Catharina's brothers Johannes and John Michael Lampman. "Young's Families" also lists children - Abram (1419) b. 10-291762 and Frederick (1420) b. 11-5-1764. Abraham (2073) b. 1769 (Canada record)

Frederick (1153) became a Loyalist and took part of his family to Canada in 1784. His son Peter went too, separately. His sons, Frederick, Abraham, and Matthew are traced in Canada. But two sons did not become Loyalists, John (John Frederick) who remained in New York State and Stephen who was in Vermont at least until 1806. See the Canadian story later in this book for the details. The United Empire Loyalist 1884 record Canada lists Frederick Lampman (1153) from New York, a wife and four children. Peter Lampman (1155) from New York with eight children. Peter Lampman (1155) is on the Canada Niagara Provision List with wife and two children. The children difference is explained in the Canada story a little further on, which see for all descent.

The marriage record in 1748 of grid. (1153) Lampman (A) has the words "naagel son Peter (1011). The last record we have of Peter (1011) is in 1744.

Henrich (1170) bp. 8-22-1727 (A) married 2-25-1750 (A) Marytje Schmidt (1171). Resided in Freehold in 1758. Issue Nicholas (1172), Hannes (1176), Elizabeth (1165), Benjamin, (1194). (1171) b1. also recorded in (BA)

Johann Michael Lampman (1202) b. 1729 (A) sponsors Joh. Michael Plank and Liesab Reu (This same baptism is also recorded in the Christian Protestant Lutheran Congregation of New York City, which included Albany, N. Y.) He m. Oct. 6, 1751 (D) Maria Brouwer (1203), both of and lived at Hosack. Issue –Elizabeth (1204), Jacob (1427), Peter (1436), Maria (1441), Catherine (1205), Harriet (6616), Abraham (1206), Annatje (1207), Henry (5772), Neeltje (1208), Cathalyntje, (1209), John Michael Lampman (1202) served on the Committee of Safety for the Sinkaick and Hoosick District, Albany Co. He was 1st Lieutenant Michael Lampman in the 14th Albany regiment of militia from Hoosick and Schaghticoke Districts and the Captain John Lampman of the 6th Regiment Rensselaer militia. There is a difference in printed statements concerning records of the Committee of Public Safety. One says John Michael (1202) furnished bail twice within five days for his son Jacob (1427) accused of Tory activities. But the record of the Committee as published (see Albany Co. minutes) states in 1781 Jacob Lantman of Hoosack, farmer, was accused of a 1777 murder. Also 1781 Jacob Lantman (1427) was arrested and denied the charge. Also 1781 Jacob (1427) and brother Michael (5498), farmers, were released on bail. Jacob (1427) was a Lieutenant in 1786 in Capt. Samuel Shaw's Albany Co. -militia, in 1788 in Captain Matthew Randall's Albany Co. militia, and in 1791 in Captain Benjamin Hawk's Rensselaer Co. militia (General Services Administration U.S. War records): From his record and that of his father (1202) the Tory story must be in error.

John Michael (1202) went to Vermont ca 1786/87. The 1790 census Swanton, Vermont has Michael 4-0-2-1. This is clearly (1202), the other female was probably Peters wife Anna Hugel (1435). The other one person may have been a slave.

Michael (1202) went on to Dunham, Quebec where he and his wife Mary Brewer (1203) deeded their farm of 130 acres, Lot 10 in the 7th Range of Dunham with grist and sawmill to his son Henry (5772) and his daughter Harriet (6616) wife of Jacob Helliker (5029) of Dunham on 2-15-1806. The discovery of this land record in 1971 has greatly added to the clarification of several problems concerning this family and the Quebec area, although in the process the local History's of "Thomas" and "Fordyce" are found in error. Michael (1202) replaces those History's Abraham (1220) [the only possibility whose identity here is and was frought with difficulties) as the original oldest Lampman settler. This land deed was actually called a Donation and used eleven double length pages. It was dated 2-15-1806 and it divided Michaels land in two, giving Harriet (6616) the north half and son Henry (5772) the south half. The land was Lot No. 10 in the 7th Range of Dunham Twp., containing 130 acres with a log house and saw and grist-mill. Henry was given the land on the condition he come from Farnham. Quebec to live in the log house and take care of his

aged and ill parents. If "Thomas" and "Fordyce" were right in death at age 80, an old man, and Michael (1202) was born 1729, the death date was 1809 and not 1804 as the books stated. Harriet (6616) on 10-231834 deeded her half, as widow of Jacob Helliker (5029) to her son-in-law -Jonathan B. Toof (6841).

All the sons of John Michael (1202) except Jacob (1427) went to Vermont about 1786 after the Revolution. They were not Tory but the boundary with Canada was not definite and two, Abraham (1206) and Henry (5772) went on to Quebec.

Michael (1202) in 1791 was elected Selectman Highgate Vermont at the same time his son Peter (1436) was elected fence viewer. No Michael appears in the 1800 census Vermont. This is reasonable as Thomas book on "The Eastern Townships" states a Michael Lampman (5498) was an Associate of Sutton Quebec along with Jacob and John Heliker, Peter Lampman (1436), and Isaac Asselstyne.

It is possible that while sons Jacob (1427), Hank (5772), Peter (1436)., and Abram (1206) were serving in Captain Odel's Co. of Colonel Van Ransselaer regiment in Vermont they liked the looks of the area and thus returned to settle. See the Vermont and Canada story later in this book.

The Commission for Conspiracies, Albany Co. Branch recorded 6-22-1778 "Board was informed that Johannes Landtman (1210) and Johannes Ruyter and others who last year went to Canada had returned. Ordered to be apprehended".

Johannes Lampman (1210) b. 1732 (A) m. Susanna Letcher (Letger, Licher, Litcher) (1211). They were witnesses to a baptism in 1753 in Albany Reformed Dutch church and at one at Schaghticoke in 1776. Issue -Peter (1212), Hannah, (1214), Hendrick (1215) Abraham (1216), Elizabeth (1462), John Jr. (1469) Anna (6790), and probably Stephen (3263). Johannes (Hans) (1210) was clearly a Tory. His estate and that of Son Hendrick were confiscated. See N. Y. in Rev. Supplement p. 256" published by E. C. Knight 1901. In the Minutes of the Albany Co. Committee of Public Safety is an entry - Susannah Lantman (a 211), along with Elizabeth Letcher, Maria Young, and Reuter women, was ordered out of State or area, (their husbands having gone over to the enemy).

Another entry also in 1780 says the petitions of Susanna Lantman and Maria Young to stay were not granted. It is most probable that John (1210) is the John Lantman, residing above Poestens Kill 1767 and in Captain Van Aernum's Co. in Colony of Rensselaer in the Colonial wars. (See report of State Historian , Colonial Series, Vol. 2). Johannes Landman (1210) and wife Susanna (1211) baptised their last child Anna (6790) in BE) 6-141776/7 with witness Caspar Landman, uncle. This baptism shows a tie back to the area where his father came from and where his uncle Caspar resided.

Son John (1469) is listed in the 1800 census Hoosick - 1 male and one female 26/45, 1 male 10/15, 1 male 10 under. The 1800 census Hoosick also lists a Jacob Lankman (5846) 1 male and 1 female 16/25 who could only be son of John (1469) who was also listed as Lankman. One branch of the family traces son Peter (1212) descent to Danbury, Vt., Rome, N: Y. and Ohio. The writer has never been able to verify this and as will be shown later clear records exist but only for part of the line. Sons Henry (1215) and John (1469) and their cousin Jacob (1427) are listed in the 1790 census Stephentown, Rensselaer Co. N. Y. with the name spelled Lentman. John (1469) 3 males 16 up, one male 15 down, 4 females. Henry (1215) 1 male 16

39

up, 4 males 15 down, 3 females. Jacob (1427) 3 males 16 up, 2 males 15 down, 4 females. In the 1800 census all three were listed as in Hoosick. John (1210) himself was listed in the 1790 census 1-0-2-0-0- as from Hoosick. What happened to Johannes is not surely known. The Haldemand papers - Returns of Loyalists 1778-1785 Ottawa Archives list at least 6 references to a John Lampman, one stating "He was a countryman who lived like a common farmer" p. 4 who was paid as a Lieutenant in Leakes Corps from 10-251777 to 12-24-1780 and served with Capt. John and Henry Ruiter and Sgt. John Hogel. Another referred to him as Loyal Ranger, 1 man, no family, farmer, who owned lands in New York. These references are clearly to (1210). The Land Board records of Loyalist petitions is not as clear. John (2078) and wife Mary Secord (2079) of Grantham are clearly listed but either of two other Johns, one of Barton and one of Thorold could be (1210).

Abraham Lampman (1220) bp. 1-10-1739 (D). The writer in edition 2 of this work was led incorrectly to assign a Greene Co. will with wife Rachel to this Abraham. Personal inspection at the Greene Co. Courthouse determined this was an Overbach will, not a Lampman one. Prior to the check later information from many sources including Canada had cast extreme doubt on the statement. Abraham (1220) appears only twice in States records when he and a Catherine Overbagh (3257) were witnesses to two baptisms in (A) in 1764 and 1790.

Elizabeth Lampman (1221) bp. 2-15-1741 (D) wit. Stevanus and Elizabeth Van Renselaar, m. 12-29-1761 (A) Nicholas Smid (1222) with issue - Henrich (1477) b. 12-3-1766 at West Camp (H); Petrus (3117); Jeremias( 3118).

Stephen Lampman (1257) b. 11-28-1736, bp. 12-8-1736 (D) witnesses Stephen and Elizabeth Van Rensselaer. The History of Greene Co.' - pub. 1888' says "he came from Coeymans to Greenville in the winter of 1759-60 with his ox team and sled and bought 200 acres". His home at an intersection of several roads became first a tavern, later a place of meeting for night schools and religious services. He m. Maria (1259) approx. 1760, daughter of Godfrey Brandow". The Lampman papers in the N. Y. State library Albany record the same. He was the third settler in the area. He is listed in the 1790 census 2-1-3-0-0in Catskill West and in the 1810 census in Town of Greenville with 2 people total. He died 7-5-1817. His will had wife Mariah and Odadish King as executors, listed sons Wilhelmus, Peter, Abraham. Issue - Peter (1260), Wilhelmus (1261), Catrina (1239), Johannes (1240), Abraham (1263). Maria Brandow (1259) was bp. in Kaatsbaan Reformed church. She died by Dec. 1825 as listed in a periodic listing of members of the Coxsackie Reformed church.

Fourth Generation

Issue of Peter Lampman (1132) and Elizabeth Schmidt (1133).

Henrich Lampman (1134) b. 1746 (A) (Bi) says b. 4-11-1746. Kisk. m. 1773 (Bi) Catherine Kremps (1135) d. of Pieter Kremps. They had two daughters, Elizabeth (1409) b. 12-5-1774 (G) sponsors- Peter Crimm and ux Elizabeth.

The other daughter was Mary (4049). He died 8-6-1777 (Bi) The (G) record of her second marriage states "21 March 1778 married the schoolmaster Johan Edward Lehmann (3258), oldest left behind son of Mr. Johann Edward Lehmann, having been preacher at Schwanebeck in Saxony, with Catherina, maiden name Krims , left behind widow of the deceased Henrich Lampman". The old Lampman bible (Bi) has been quoted in print as reading Henrich's wife was Catharine Gosmer, daughter of Peter. In 1970 the writer saw for the first time photostats of the bible record and it is his opinion based on some knowledge of German that the scrawl interpreted as Gosmer is indeed Krins. Confirmatory evidence of this error is in the will of Peter Kremps of Stone Arabia dated June 30, 1801 and probated July 24, 1807 which mentions "Dau. Catharine, wife of John Leyman (ICY. G. & B., vol. 56, p. 156). At Henrich's (1134) bp. his father was listed as Peter Junior (1132). The New York State Public Library has furnished a copy of
