Stephen P. Lampman (1718) m. first Lydia Brady (or Briely) (1719) and second Susannah Lowing (1720). He was born 11-7-1788, died 8-25-1842, is buried at Sunbury, Ohio. One source lists 3 children to first wife and 11 to the second. A second source "A Biographical History of North Eastern Ohio - published by Lewis Co. Chicago, 1893" lists two children to first wife and 13 to the second. The following is from this second source - Stephen (1718) b. 11-17-1788 Rensellaer Co., N.Y. d. 1842 removed to Ohio in 1831, first to Delaware Co., married Susan Lowen (1720) b. 9-3-1790 Danby, Rutland Co., Vt. d. 4-5-1869. Their son Wilson Lampman (1727) was born 919-1828 at Granby, Oswego Co., N.Y. (listed as 10th of the family, removed to Geauga Co., where he married Marion Knight (1728). The only problem is that Wilson's (1727) biography states his grandfather was Isaac, not Peter. The only explanation is that his grandfather was Peter Isaac, a common combination in those days.

The genealogy of the Lowing family confirms in part the biography of Wilson Lampman (1727). It states Susanna Lowing (1720) b. 9-3-1790 Danby, Vt. married 1812 a farmer Stephen Lampman (1718) as his second wife. By his first wife Stephen (1718) had issue Phoebe (6274), Joseph Ward (6275), and Stephen V. (6239). Stephen (1718) and Susanna (1720) had 13 children - Mary Ann (6276), Edwin Famam (6277), Abram (6278), George (6223), Grove (6279), Charles (6280), Clark Robert (6236), Helen (6281) d. infant and Helena (6282) twin, died young, James Lowing (6283), Major Wilson (1727), Truman Adam (6284), Durell (6285). After a few years at Tinmouth, Vt. Stephen (1718) moved to Granby, N.Y. and 1831 moved to Sunbury, Delaware Co., Ohio. He and wife Susanna who died 1869 lie in Sunbury, Ohio cemetery. The 1840 census Berkshire Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio lists Stephen (1718) age 50/60, his wife age 40/50, 1M 20/30, 1F 20/30, 3M 15/10, 2M 10/15, 2M 5/10, 2F 0/5, 1M 0/5. This census has been interpreted several ways, one giving Stephen and Susanna 15 children with Susanna's age at last birth at 48. Close inspection of the available family and record data show that four children are not in the census - Mary Ann (6276) b. ca 1812 married and away, Edwin (6277) b. 1814 married 1836, Abram (6278) b. 1816 d. 1828, George (6223) b. 1818 married 1840 and away to Conn. There is only one child of Stephen (1718), namely Stephen V. (6239) and his wife, presently unknown, who could fit the age group 20/30 and account for the 2F and 1M age 0/5. This interpretation leaves Durell (6285) b. 1833 as last child of Susanna (1720) at her age 43, and also satisfies the biography of son Wilson (1727) who stated he was #10 of 13 children. The rest of the census fits - Grove (6279), Charles (6280), Clark (6236) and 3M 15/20, James (6283), Wilson (1727), 2M 10/15, Truman (6284), Durell (6285) 2M 5/10. The child Helena (6282) b. 1825 d. before 1840 census makes Wilson (1727) the #10. The 2F under 5 are unknown daughters of Stephen V. and the 1M under 5 is his probable son James M. (6366) b. 1838. This leaves a gap in Wilson's biography needing one child to make 13. This is probably Mary Jane (6152) b. 1831 in Ohio, the year her father came to Ohio, who married 1849 Charles Hodgden, Jr. (5328) per the Delaware Co. CH record. The 1840 census does not reflect this Mary Jane. The census is in error. In this time period there are only two other Lampman marriages recorded in Delaware Co., that of George (6223) in 1840 and Grove (6279) in 1843. Now it is true that agreement to a census error also allows of the possibility that Mary Jane (6152) was daughter of Stephen V. (6239). All the descent of Stephen P. (1718) removed from Delaware Co. Ohio as is shown by the land records there but one, James Lowing (6283) returned in 1866 from Iowa. In time his descent moved also.

Susanna Lowing (1720) was daughter of William Lowing (C329) and Anna Haight (C330). William Lowing (C329) changed his name from James William MacLaughn (C331) b. 1758 Jamaica.

Concerning Mary Jane Lampman (6152) it is stated the census might be in error. Of course, there is the possibility that Mary Jane was recorded in some other household in 1840. Not

an uncommon thing. It is possible that Stephen P. (1718) son Edwin (6277) was living at home in 1840 and the father of the three young children listed.

Issue of Stephen Lampman (1718) and Lydia Brierly (1719)

Stephen V. Lampman (6239) b. Tinsmouth, Vt. lived at Granby, N.Y. and with his father owned land at Jaspar, Indiana.

Per the Lowing genealogy, he may have been killed by robbers. It is probable that the James Lampman (6366) b. 1838 per the 1850 census, Trenton Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio of the James Lowing Lampman (6283) household, was his son, living with his uncle after his father's death. The 1850 census of James (6283) also lists a Susanna Malory age 60 b. Vt. 1790. This remarkable coincidence with Susanna Lowing (1720) also born Vt. in 1790 allows of two possible explanations. After death of Stephen P. (1718) in 1842, Susanna (1720) could have remarried a Malory (there is no record of such a marriage in Delaware Co.) who was dead or missing or absent for the census, and she went to live with son James until her death in 1869 when she was interred in Sunbury, Ohio cemetery. The other possibility is that Susan Malory was mother of the wife of Stephen V. (6239) and the probable son of Stephen V. - James M. (6366) was James Malory Lampman.

(6239). Mary Jane (6152) married 5-20-1849 Charles Hodgden, Jr. (5328), minister Rev. Jefre Mcbride - Minister of the Gospel (Delaware Co. record). In the 1850 census of Kingston Twp., Delaware Co. of Charles (5328) age 22, wife Jane (6152) age 19 born Ohio. The record is clear Ohio, not New York. Mary Jane (6152) died 1860 or 1863 per two separate pension statements made by Charles (5328) in 1898. There is an 1849 map of Delaware Co. Ohio in existence which shows a farm in Bennington Twp. (now Morrow Co.) with an unusual and not clearly decipherable nametag, which for a long time was thought to be J. Lampman, Heir(s) sk J. Moore. However under a highpower microscope, it is clearly not Lampman. It may be Lanspear, Lampear, Lansport, etc. Thus another myth laid to rest. The 1860 census Ft. Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, clears up a lot. It lists David Lampman (1974) age 59, farmer b. N.Y, wife Nancy age 53 and children; Wm. (5073) age 16, George (5801) age 15; Martha (7084); a daughter not daughter-in-law age 23, b. N.Y.; Wm. A. (7086) age 4, b. Indiana; Mariah (7087) age 3, b. Indiana. These later two and George (7085) b. 1867, are possible children of David's (1794) son David (7053). The only other David known in the Greene Co. lines is David (1983) son of Henry (1174) b. 1815 who appears in the 1850 census Saugerties, N.Y., and in 1869 was living in Saugerties. Davids are few. In the John Caspar (1131) line we have a David (1350) bp. 1794 whose record is now clear in Wisconsin. Then we have David (1974) b. 1803, son of Stephen (1967) who removed to Ft. Wayne, Indiana. This David by circumstantial evidence then removed to Montcalm Co., Michigan.

In 1859 per Ellis "History of Genesee Co. Mich." he was constable there. He married 1129-1858 Martha (Mattie) A. Rose (4472) of Genessee, Genesee Co. Mich. at residence of her father Philip Rose (6159) and mother Alzerua Rose (6160) (marriage recorded at Detroit, Mich.). From 1875-1880 he is Isted as carpenter Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1898 Martha A. Rose Lampman (4472) resided in Grand Rapids. Jerome (4468) died 1-15-1898 Marion, Texas at home of his son Carl J. (6051). The 1870 census Vermontville, Eaton Co., Mich. lists Jerome (4468) age 40 b. N.Y. cabinet maker, wife Martha (4472) age 30 b. Michigan with children - Frank (6192) age 11, Carl (6051) age 9, Lynn (6193) age 6, Gene (6194) age 3, Dora (6195) age 10 months. The 1880 census Grand Rapids, Michigan lists Mattie (4472) age 40, Carl (6051) age 19, Eugene (6194) age 13, Dora (6195) age 10 and Arlie (6271) age 5. The application of Martha (4472) in 1898 at age 58 for a war widow's pension states neither she or Jerome were previously married. She died 4-29-1907. Jerome is an unusual Lampman name and only one has been found in the Michigan records. Martha Rose (4472) mother was Alzerua Rose (6160) and most of the letters were written by her, and not by Martha Rose as has been stated by descent. Three of the letters were from Alzerua to Martha. One refers to Martha's sisters Ida (6663) and Emmy (6664). One letter was from a friend of both Jerome (4468) and his father Stephen (1971) written Hartland, N.Y. June 1870 and refers to Jerome's (4468) sister Cordelia (6155). The combinations of Ida and Cordelia are unusual. The Rose letters never mention Ida. They were dated 1862, 1863, 1864. From the unusual name combinations and the fact Ida Cordelia Lampman (4416) was born Michigan to Jerome Lampman several deductions have been made but none appears to stand up in view of the widow pension statement of no previous marriage. The St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Cibole, Texas, records death 1-15-1898 at Marion, Texas, of Jerome Lampman (4468) b. 11-1829, Seneka Falls, N.Y.
